SCHOOL SYSTEM IN SWEDEN

There are very few private schools in Sweden. The school-starting age is seven, but from July 1, 1997 municipalities are obliged to accept all six-years-olds wanting to start school. All children are entitled to at least one year of pre-school education before starting primary school.

In Sweden school is compulsory for all children between the ages of seven and sixteen. There is a nine-year compulsory school and a voluntary upper secondary school. Compulsory schooling is free of charge, and no payment can be charged for educations material, school lunches or school transport. The term primary school covers grades 1-6 mainly.
